Favorite way of treating myself: bubble baths, and cooking books / magazines. Preferably an activity that involves both. Yes, PLEASE. 🛀🏻🥂🛀🏻
My latest obsession is Baking From Scratch. By obsession I mean I’ve been passing by the magazine station at the grocery store, picking it up, touching the pages (oh those nice heavy mate pages), and putting it back.
I have low-key obsessions you guys, I mean come on – that thing is $14.99!!
A few weeks ago I finally cave in. I was leisurely grocery shopping, and decided to splurge. Btw, am I the only one who LOVES grocery shopping? Ben hates it and always rushes me, so when I get the chance to shop alone, boy do I take my sweet sweet time. Please let me know in the comments if you get me, I can’t be the only 20-min-perfect-tomato-seeker out there. Let us unite.
I try to make at least one recipe before subscribing / purchasing a recipe book, and this time I’ve chosen this Berry Buttermilk Cake. It looked so pweety and I wanted to make a treat for my mom and sister on International Women’s Day 💐💐💐
Recipe: Berry Buttermilk Cake
Berry Buttermilk Cake with Mascarpone Crème Fraîche (mouthful, isn’t it?) by Bake From Scratch
What I Liked
- Relatively easy
What I Didn’t Like
This berry buttermilk cake is pretty meh 🤷🏻♀️. It almost taste like a cheese danish in a way, which is nice. I honestly don’t have much to say, besides that it’s pretty uneventful. It’s not bad, don’t get me wrong, but if I’m going through the effort of baking and frosting a 3 layer cake, I want it to have wow-like qualties, and this one defintely didnt. My mom said it’s “good”, which is her way of not having any real compliments to give to something. ‘nough said.
- The egg-whites sugar coating berry method. Didn’t work for me at all. The sugar dissolved into the egg whites into a really gross goo. whatever goo means, you know.
- I didn’t end up making the recommended frosting, and went with my foolproof swiss buttercream instead. I think mascarpone and creme fraiche are a bit too tart for this cake, and would go better on a sweeter cake. Another downside is that both of these items are quite expensive and are definitely not a staple in many fridges, which means another trip to the grocery store. Don’t know about you, but it’s snowing here, and I am NOT leaving the house for creme fraiche.
Make it Again?
No Sir! 👎
This cake is super pretty, but man am I tired from pretty cakes that do not taste pretty. Sometimes I get the feeling people think we don’t actually eat those cakes, just take pictures of them.
Speaking of pretty pictures, here’s a ‘behind the scenes’ look. In case you’re having a bad day, I hope this will cheer you up: 15sec after taking this pic, the box cover fell and SMASHED THE CAKE. The end.
