Sloppy Joes. What an American dish. Easy, quick, and good. SO good.
I remember the first time I tried sloppy joes. It was almost 10 years ago (god, the time!), back when I was a teenager in Israel. A new joint opened in town: a little 50’s feel burger place that served fries in red plastic baskets (you know the ones I’m talking about), and burgers in a checkered paper. Man, let me tell you, that American feel was the DEFINITION of cool for us, Israeli teenagers.
We used to hang out there a lot, but then the place closed, and there was no other place to get sloppy joes from. Like, literally nowhere else. Years went by, and I have forgotten all about the dish. That being, all until yesterday.
You know those moments when it’s like a wakeup call and you think “omg, I have to eat X”, and it can be something you’ve totally forgotten about, or avoided eating (shootout to you, previous picky eaters); but the thought it born, and you become possessed by it. You know you have to drop everything off, google recipes, go to the grocery store, and make that thing, NOW.
That is my story with the rebirth of sloppy joes. I was thinking about dinner plans, and realized there CANNOT (simply cannot) be any other plans but sloppy joes, a dish I have all but forgotten about. I was worried it might take long and it won’t taste the same, but when I found this recipe and read “I’ve been making it for 20 years”, I knew it was the one for me.
It took less than half an hour, and I had the most delicious sloppy joes ever at the table. My sister even said it taste like a McDonalds burger, which is a compliment of the highest degree if you’re an ex-junk food addict like me 😋
Recipe: Sloppy Joes
What I Liked
- Everything? the recipe is super quick and delicious. You can find all of the ingredients in your pantry, and there were no fussy elements (see Berry Buttermilk Cake with Mascarpone Crème Fraîche from last week…)
- I liked the addition of mustard powder, and the not-enormous amount of ketchup. Seriously, other recipes call for up to 2cups of ketchup 😐
What I Didn’t Like
- I made two versions: one with barbecue sauce, and one without. I personally like it without more, but that’s up to you. Instead of the barbecue sauce, I added 1 tsp of paprika for smokiness, and it came out perfect.
- This recipe, and especially my version, makes for not very “sloppy” sloppy joes. If you want them sloppier, simply add more liquid.
Make it Again?
YES!!! ’nuff said you guys, there sloppy joes are delicious, go make them and come back to report your thoughts, I’m dying to know if you liked them as much as I did 😄
